Navigation Arts Business Training
Navigation Arts Business Training program (or simply, Navigation) is peer-led training that is nationally accredited and developed specifically for artists – by artists (and arts administrators) who understand the demands of the industry. The course has been continually developed over the past 10 years to better equip young independent artists with the skills necessary to get down to business. Youth Arts Queensland, in partnership with Registered Training Organisation Creating Links delivers the Navigation program across Queensland with support from the Department of Employment Economic Development and Innovation through their Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative.
The Navigation Arts Business Training program has been developed with ongoing industry feedback constantly shaping the course to ensure industry relevance. In 2011, YAQ lead a complete overhaul of the resources, tools and workbook to create a new system in response to the changing needs of young artists today. The course covers: Project Planning, Cultural Brokerage, Creating a safe work environment, Marketing, Money, Funding, Contracting, Presenting and Pitching.
The course provides artists with support to build:
· A business plan
· Materials for pitching
· A sample grant application/partnership proposal
Navigation has a full one week in-class commitment, during which time artists are brought together with industry professionals to network, share ideas and get their head around the nuts and bolts of operating arts businesses. After the one week course, participants have ongoing engagement online with their alumni and access to YAQ staff and trainers for further advice and assistance to complete their course and get their projects off the ground.
“Last day of Navigation Arts Business Training today. What an amazing week it’s been gathering knowledge from such awesome people in the industry. Look out 2012 – lots of plans coming your way!” made. Creative Space, Toowoomba
Once successfully completed, Navigation participants have the confidence, knowledge and skills to operate their own micro-business, lead their collective through complex projects, or work in an entry-level position in an arts organisation.
